What if my baby isn’t breathing?

New studies show about about 10% of babies need help transitioning after birth.

This little one just needed help moving the amniotic fluid through the lungs to make space for the air. A well-trained midwife will help a baby make this transition so it is much more comfortable and a better experience for him/her.

Babies are equipped with a safety net to allow time for this transition. The umbilical cord provides oxygen to the baby for 3 to 5 minutes after birth. It is essential that the umbilical cord stay intact during this time to keep baby well oxygenated. Mother nature knows exactly what she is doing. Birth is an amazing experience, our bodies and the baby’s body is prepared for it.
